The Sierra Nevada mountain range in California and Nevada runs 400 miles (640 km) north-to-south, and is approximately 70 miles (110 km) across east-to-west. It is the highest and longest mountain range in the contiguous United States. To the east, the melting snow of the mountains create small rivers that flow into the Great Basin of Nevada and eastern California. Notable locations include the Alabama Hills, Mono Lake, the ghost town of Bodie and Ancient Bristlecone Pines in the White Mountains.
