EVENT OVERVIEW:
Join Diana McPherson photographing wildlife around San Juan Island in the beautiful Salish Sea off the mainland coast of Washington state. Spring is an exciting time for wildlife as the young foxes are exploring away from the den, southern resident orcas are returning as they follow the salmon runs, and harbor seal pups are being born on the rugged rocks scattered around the island. Many sea birds are arriving as well as other marine mammals including Biggs Orcas, humpback whales, and gray whales. Join us for this incredible opportunity to explore and photograph the wildlife that thrive in the Salish Sea around San Juan Island, Washington.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
We will photograph a variety of wildlife on land and at sea. Fox kits, bald eagles, and deer are quite abundant on the island while Southern Resident Orcas are the marine mammal that San Juan Island is famous for. Humpback, gray, and minke whales return to the Salish Sea in the spring as well as Bigg’s Orcas (aka Transients), harbor seals, Stellar sea lions, and more recently a promising return of sea otters. Songbirds, eagles, and seabirds are found all around. We will also have the opportunity for sunrise and/or sunset photos from the beach or the marina. This has been one of Diana’s favorite places and she is excited to share this with you.
Friday Harbor is a small town with many cafes, restaurants, and a grocery store, as well as several artisan shops.

PHOTOGRAPHY LOCATION:
Your leader is familiar with the areas that you’ll be visiting, and locations will be based on what’s most photogenic at the time, wildlife activity, weather conditions, etc.
Some of the locations that we will most likely photograph include:
• American Camp National Historical Park/Pickett’s Lane:
A former US military camp set up in the mid-1800’s in response to the conflict between British and American settlers over the shooting of a pig on the territory border. The open coastal fields are now home to several families of red foxes. A bald eagle pair nest nearby. Bald eagles and hawks are seen frequently soaring low over the grassy field looking for their next rabbit or rodent meal.
• Haro Strait:
The waterway between San Juan Island and Vancouver Island is frequently traveled by Orcas, humpbacks, and other whales. Harbor seals and shore birds feed along the bull kelp near shore.
• Salish Sea:
In the spring, the Southern Resident Orcas are returning to the Salish Sea following their primary prey source, salmon. Bigg’s Orcas also return to the Sea following their prey source of marine mammals. Gray and humpback whales return to the area from their long migration from Baja and Hawaii, respectively, to feed in the rich waters of the Salish Sea. Stellar sea lions and harbor seals haul out along the jagged rocks to rest between meals.

GENERAL:
We will be based in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, Washington during this regional event.
This event is designed for nature photographers at all levels of experience. For the best experience, please know your camera before you arrive, and bring your manual in case we need to look up something.
Assistance will be available in the field for those who wish to improve their photographic skills. If you already have plenty of photography experience, Diana will ensure you get to the best locations at the best times to capture those perfect shots.
Please keep in mind this NANPA Regional Event is designed to be a photo tour, not a photo workshop. In other words, there are no formal instruction sessions planned, there are no assignments, you will not be receiving any handouts or the like. That being said, your leader, Diana, has experience as a photography workshop leader and is available to answer questions and give you guidance. If you need help, please advocate for yourself and speak up and ask for help – Diana is happy to help. Be aware that many of your fellow participants may also be accomplished photographers and may be able to help you too. Part of the regional event experience is the camaraderie that comes from sharing experiences and lessons learned among participants. If you notice someone with the same or similar camera, perhaps they can help you with an issue you’ve been wondering about, and maybe you can return the favor.
Attendance and participation at NANPA Regional Events is limited to registered attendees only. Anyone wishing to participate in any portion of, or travel with a registered attendee during the group event must contact the NANPA office and pay the full registration fee.
