Wild Indonesia – Javan Rhino and Sumatran orangutan expedition with Amit Eshel

August 1 - August 16

This specialist tour is an expedition focused entirely on finding the world’s rarest large mammal: the Javan Rhino.
The species faces a critical situation. As of the latest 2023 WWF report, approximately 45 Javan Rhinos are left in the wild, and critically, there are none in captivity. Their rarity is astounding; perhaps fewer than 50 people in recorded history have observed a wild Javan Rhino.
Due to strict permit regulations governing access to the core area of Ujung Kulon National Park—the last stronghold for the species—this expedition is capped at just four people total (including the leader). We are pioneering one of the first small-group expeditions into this protected zone.
While a Javan Rhino sighting is challenging and cannot be guaranteed, this pioneering effort aims to boost conservation awareness and support for the species.
The second phase of our journey takes us to Sumatra’s Gunung Leuser National Park, which hosts the world’s largest remaining population of wild Sumatran orangutans. We specifically seek out fully wild orangutans, offering a more genuine wildlife experience compared to observing semi-wild individuals at feeding stations.
The forest is also home to elusive predators like Sumatran tigers and Sunda clouded leopards. While sightings of these are rare, we anticipate high chances of observing wild orangutans, Thomas’s langurs, white-handed gibbons, and various macaques, along with abundant bird, reptile, and insect life.
