We know of only one place in the world where pumas, (mountain lions or cougars), can be photographed reliably. A large ranch with a spectacular landscape near Torres del Paine National Park is the grand setting for a unique opportunity to photograph this elusive big cat.
Trip timing: In late autumn (May-June in the Southern Hemisphere), pumas have developed their winter coats. Females with new cubs will be less shy than they are earlier in the season. Late autumn may also produce snow, which creates interesting photo conditions. The days will be shorter and the pumas are more active than in summer, when they sleep more. With the sun lower on the horizon, the light is more interesting.
We will move around by vehicle but will approach pumas on foot whenever possible. Generally, this will not involve extended hiking, but you should be in good physical condition and able to carry your gear for daily hikes of one or more miles.
Being a photographer is not a requirement to join us for this trip. Every participant will go home with a more intimate understanding of mountain lions.
