Nature’s Greatest Lightshow: Photographing Auroras May 28, 2026

The aurora is nature’s greatest lightshow – twisty ribbons of green crawl across the sky, occasionally bursting open like a hand reaching down from space, with hints of pink, blue, and red, moving as if under a will of their own. It’s no wonder that seeing the aurora is on many people’s bucket list. Photographer Rod Barbee has been photographing this natural spectacle for over a decade. In this webinar, Rod will share tips on the camera gear and settings you need to capture stunning pictures of the aurora.
The solar activity that causes auroras follows an 11-year cycle. 2026 marks the end of a solar maximum period of more aurora activity. To take advantage of this timing, in September 2026 Rod Barbee and Mary Louise Ravese will be leading a NANPA tour to photograph auroras in Yellowknife, Canada. Yellowknife, in Canada’s Northwest Territories, is one of the best places in the world to see and photograph auroras; it sits directly beneath the auroral oval, and auroras are seen, on average, two out of every three nights. In addition, the lakes and evergreen trees in the dark sky countryside outside of Yellowknife make for great reflections and subject matter to pair with the aurora display in the sky. For those who are interested in joining the tour, Rod will give a sneak peek of what to expect during the tour along with suggestions for clothing, photo and other gear to bring.
