Bubble-Net Feeding Humpback Whales with Neil McDermott

Few wildlife experiences on earth rival the precision and power of humpback whales working together in coordinated bubble-net feeding—and there is no better vantage point than from the deck of A Whale’s Song Expeditions in Southeast Alaska. Each spring, groups of humpbacks corral schools of herring with spiraling curtains of bubbles before erupting through the surface in explosive, perfectly timed lunges. From our nimble, photography-focused vessel, you’ll be positioned at water level with unobstructed shooting lanes, fast maneuverability, and the ability to respond quickly as whales reset and repeat the sequence. This is intimate, close-quarters access designed specifically for photographers who want eye-level drama, synchronized lunges and the raw intensity of coordinated predation.
Our bubble-net tours are built around light, behavior, and positioning—not crowds. With limited guest numbers and a captain who understands feeding patterns, tide movement, and bird activity cues, we prioritize ethical viewing while maximizing photographic opportunity. You’ll have space to move, a stable shooting platform, and the flexibility to adjust angles as action unfolds—whether capturing wide environmental storytelling frames or tight, explosive detail. For wildlife photographers seeking one of the most dynamic marine behaviors on the planet, this is a front-row seat to a spectacle that exists in only a handful of places worldwide, and Sitka, is its epicenter.
