Badlands of South Dakota Fall 2025 with Osprey Photo Workshops

During this Badlands of South Dakota Photo Workshop we will explore Badlands National Park and locations in the vicinity of the park. The workshop begins with an orientation session on Friday, September 12, 2025 at 7:00 PM and ends on Monday, September 15, 2025 at Sunset. We will be in the field at before dawn to photograph sunrise and take advantage of the early morning light. Likewise, we will end each day’s activities at sunset when the sun is low in the sky, colors are warm, and the light accentuates the relief and texture of the land. During the beginning and end of the day, the light is soft light and complementary. Animals are more active at this time. Photo opportunities include both the unique scenery of the Badlands and local wildlife. Animals look their best with fur ready for colder temperatures.

At first glance, the land seems sterile, yet close examination reveals a variety of creatures. Agile bighorn scale steep canyon walls and the males fight for dominance of herds. Pronghorn and buffalo graze on prairie grasses while hawks circle overhead. In prairie dog towns, occupants groom, nibble on grasses, and jump, yipping alarm calls suggesting there is an intruder nearby — perhaps a badger, coyote or burrowing owl in search of a meal. Providing easy access to unique geologic formations and favorite wildlife haunts, a loop road meanders through the northern portion of the park. Sage Creek Rim Road provides access to other areas of the park with different topography. I arrive before the workshop scout the area and identify the best locations for photo opportunities. This is the 4th workshop I have conducted in the park. Group size limited to 6. Price includes 4 days accommodations at the Best Western Motel in Wall.
