Art of Winter Workshop with Chris Murray
Autumn may get all the attention with its stunning fall foliage, but the beauty to be found in winter is as varied as it is limitless. What people don’t like about winter, the bleakness, the lack of color, is precisely what makes winter a fabulous time of year for photography. Winter is the most graphical of all the seasons. Trees that only a month earlier were bursting with color are now laid bare, their naked limbs standing in sharp contrast against the snowy landscape. However, those same trees now have a different kind of beauty, more stark but in many ways more compelling. Lines, shapes, patterns, contrast, all carry much more weight and importance in the wintertime. This added emphasis on the visual elements coupled with the relative absence of color also make winter an ideal time to practice black-and-white photography.
Join me as I share with you the reasons winter is my most favorite season in which to photograph. We will explore the bounty that winter has to offer in the Thousand Islands region of Upstate New York, an area of incomparable and diverse natural beauty and the source of many of my personally favorite photographs. With an emphasis on the creative aspect of photography rather than the technical, the focus of this workshop will be on making creative and personally expressive images, those that venture beyond the documentary and representational. Particular attention will be paid to enhancing your creativity through your own vision and learning to see beyond the obvious and spectacular. Whether your interests lie in color or black-and-white photography, I will share my inspiration with you and provide individual field instruction as well as indoor instructional sessions and reviews.
Lodging will be at the 1000 Islands Harbor Hotel in Clayton, NY. A room block and meeting room have been reserved for indoor instruction, image processing and reviewing.
