OVERVIEW:

Drone photography is a method of making landscape images that can open up a new way of seeing and imagining the world that we explore.  Like any new photographic tool, this new perspective of viewing the land is full of promise but demands fresh thinking and a new visualization of the entire concept of the landscape image.  But the drone itself is a new tool and has many requirements, a new learning curve and new formal rules to learn and follow.

Exploring the world of drone photography can feel like information overload and it can be hard to discern whose recommendations to trust. NANPA values experts who can share with you their insights to get the high-quality images you desire, and do so in an ethical and responsible way.

In this two-part drone photography NANPA webinar series, we will examine some special challenges with drone photography and how to overcome them. If you are considering drone photography, session 1 will help you to navigate the process of getting started. If you have a drone, but are wanting to learn how to better take advantage of it for artistic landscape photography, then session 2 is for you.

The format of each live online session will include a presentation followed by a question and answer period. The live sessions will be recorded and available for re-viewing by registered participants.

Session 1: Getting started with Drone Photography (1.5 hours)

Drone photography gives you the creative freedom and ability to place a camera in spots where you cannot physically stand, such as high above a mountain ridge or directly over crashing waves, or places where you’re just not comfortable with your ability to hike to. Suddenly patterns and vistas are revealed that were only visible from above. What used to cost thousands of dollars to capture from a plane or helicopter can now be achieved with a portable, relatively affordable consumer drone.

While drone photography is incredibly rewarding, there is a lot to learn before you take flight. Whether you’re curious about the gear or worried about the rules, this training session is designed to clear the air and get you started with confidence.

What we’ll cover:

  • The Right Gear: Discover which drones are best for photography, what they cost, and my personal drone recommendations.
  • Care and Maintenance: We’ll cover best practices to care for and maintain a drone in good flying order.
  • Flight Basics: Is it hard to fly? We’ll discuss the learning curve and what it takes to become a competent, comfortable and safe drone pilot.
  • Rules & Regulations: Stay on the right side of the law. We’ll break down FAA requirements, licensing, and airspace rules, along with the “unwritten” etiquette of ethical and responsible drone flying.
  • Flight Planning & Safety: Learn how to use weather data and worthwhile flight apps to plan effective photography shoots while keeping you and your equipment safe.
  • Pro Tips: We’ll wrap up with the most common beginner mistakes—and exactly how you can avoid them.

Ready to see the world from a new perspective? Join us and take the first step toward mastering photography from the sky.

Session 2: The Art of Landscape Drone Photography – camera and photography considerations that are unique to using a drone (2 hours)

Break free from just ground-level photography and discover a whole new dimension of creativity where the choice of altitude impacts your imagery. Drones offer more than just a high vantage point; they introduce a unique set of photographic opportunities and optimal camera settings that differ significantly from traditional landscape shooting with your feet on terra firma. There are many new and incredibly creative advantages that a drone camera has that may not be immediately apparent. This session explores how to leverage drones aka “sky cameras” to find artistic compositions that are simply impossible from the ground.

Key highlights of this session include:

Drone Optimized Camera Settings: Master the specific drone camera photography modes and settings that differ from handheld cameras. We’ll also cover advanced features that can boost your creative output.

Efficiency in the Air: With limited flight time, every minute counts. I’ll break down the six essential types of drone compositions and share strategies for finding and framing subjects quickly. Not all subject matter is effective for drone images. I will explain and show how some subject matter works especially well from the air, and what subjects are not as effective.

Three-Dimensional Composition: Learn to think beyond the horizontal plane. We’ll discuss how changing altitude—not just position—drastically alters dramatic impact and helps you find hidden patterns in the landscape.

The Power of Light: In aerial imagery, the quality and angle of light is even more critical than with ground-based photography. We’ll examine how different times of day affect the “look” from above and how to use various lighting conditions to your advantage.

Practical Outputs: From the air to the wall—we’ll discuss what you can realistically do with your files, including practical and important questions regarding file quality and how large you can realistically print drone images.

Along the way I will illustrate these points showing real world example images from my own drone photography portfolio.

DANIEL ANDERSON:

Daniel Anderson is a Door County, Wisconsin photographer living in Ellison Bay.  He has photographed widely throughout the United States and Europe.  He has taught many workshops since the 1980’s. He also has led photographic tours to many exciting locations in different parts of the world.

He began his photographic career after studying with Ansel Adams by making finely crafted black and white prints with an 8×10 view camera.  He has evolved into digital printing using high-end digital equipment and technologies and now is able to produce both color and black and white prints to even higher standards than were possible in the film era. A major part of his photographic work now uses a drone for high quality images of the landscape.

His work also includes a series of landscape images from Antarctica, Door County, Chile, Greece, Greenland, Italy, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Spain and the Faroe Islands.  He has also photographed a series of Cathedrals and Abbeys,  Door County barn interiors and a multi-year project of a single Door County farm.  His work has been widely exhibited throughout the U.S. and Europe and his images are found in many public and private collections.

In 2018 he began to use a drone to expand his creative Landscape Photography. Every year drones have become a more and more important tool in his work. Today drone photography constitutes the majority of his photography. He has presented many drone seminars and teaches one-on-one drone flying workshops.

His work may be seen at Fine Line Designs Gallery in Sister Bay Wisconsin and in his Ellison Bay Studio by appointment. To view some of Dan’s photography online visit his website www.danielandersonphotography.com
