Photographing Fall in the Bayou – lessons from Caddo Lake, TX August 24, 2026

August 24 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT

The swamps and bayous of the American South offer an intriguing fall color photographic alternative compared to fall color in New England or the western mountain ranges. Instead of deciduous hardwood trees like maples, oaks and aspens turning colors from yellow to red, the southern swamps feature Bald Cypress trees with needles that turn from gold to russet in Fall. Spanish moss drapes the trees that emerge from shallow waters. At this time of year, some mornings feature fog rising from the water’s surface and the occasional wading bird peeks out from the edges of the vegetation. The combination of all these elements makes for magical landscape images.

One of the largest and best-known cypress swamps in the country is in Caddo Lake on the Texas-Louisiana border. In this webinar, photographers Jeff Vanuga and Mary Louise Ravese introduce you to the photographic possibilities in and around Caddo Lake, key photography considerations and techniques for photographing here, what to expect in the field, and how to make the most of this unique photographic location.

November 1-5, 2026 Jeff and Mary Louise are leading a NANPA photo tour “Autumn in the Bayou-Caddo Lake TX” and there are still a few spots available if you’d like to join them.  For those interested in attending and those already signed up, Jeff and Mary Louise will discuss specific details regarding the NANPA tour in the second half of the webinar. At the end of the webinar, there will be an opportunity for webinar attendees to ask questions.

If Caddo Lake is on your photography list, this webinar will help you arrive prepared, confident, and ready to capture the beauty and character of Caddo Lake.

This is a free webinar to attend, but registration is required to receive the Zoom connection link to the live session as well as the subsequent webinar recording.
