NANPA is excited to announce that Tom Kennedy will be joining us at Summit!. On Saturday, May 6, at 1:00 p.m., Kennedy will sit down for a wide-ranging 90-minute discussion with ASMP Head of National Content and Education & former professional nature photographer Thomas Maddrey. They’ll discuss nature photography, stories from the field, what it takes to make it into the pages of Nat Geo, and some behind-the-scenes insight into what it’s like running the most prestigious photo department in the world.
Summit attendees will have opportunities to talk with, and have their work evaluated by, Kennedy during a very limited number of portfolio reviews he will be doing at the Summit.

Kennedy is one the world’s best-known and most respected visual journalists. In addition to his 10 years leading National Geographic Society’s Photographic Division, which produced all the still photography for the Society, including for the Society’s iconic namesake Magazine, Kennedy was previously Managing Editor for Multimedia at washingtonpost.com, where he created the first documentary video team to produce stories for a newspaper website. He has created, directed, and edited visual journalism projects that earned Pulitzer Prizes, as well as Emmy, Peabody, and Edward R. Murrow awards.
He was also a professor of documentary photography, and Chair of the Alexia Foundation, at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and has served on numerous boards, including for the Eddie Adams Photo Workshop.
NANPA President Beth Huning said: “Tom Kennedy has been a sought-after featured speaker at some of the most prestigious photography and journalism conferences and workshops around the globe. We are thrilled he will be with us at this year’s Summit and that our members will have the chance to hear from him, speak with him, and learn from him. The 2023 Summit is shaping up to be one of the most exciting we’ve ever had, in many ways the result of our partnership with ASMP. We’re excited to share this news about Tom Kennedy with you. So please watch for more news about the 2023 Summit coming soon.”
