How I Got the Shot
This was taken at a bear rescue center called Fortress of the Bear in Sitka, Alaska. I was shooting from a catwalk above the bears looking down into a spacious enclosure. These bears were in a pond. I added painterly effects later.
What I Used
Nikon D850 (Continuous High setting, Tamron 150-600mm set at 460mm, f6.3, 1/1600, ISO 800.
About Me
I’m based in Lotus, California, in the Sierra Nevada foothills east of Sacramento. I am a full-time photographer, shooting mostly landscapes and wildlife. I lead photo tours to various corners of the world and I’ve been photographing and publishing my nature photography since 1972. I’ve taught photography since 1989, including a 20-year stint at a local community college and, now, in private workshops. Favorite locations include Alaska and various places near my home.
My Photographic Journey
I grew up living in wild areas as the daughter of a park ranger and thus have been interested in natural history all my life. I have been passionately interested in art since I was a small child, and transferred that interest to photography after extensive traveling in my 20s. Early on I was mentored by several National Geographic photographers. The evolution of camera gear and software over the years has meant better images and a higher success rate, keeping my interest piqued. I developed an interest in painterly effects several years ago after seeing amazing possibilities on my cell phone. I’ve transferred that vision to my larger format images.
NANPA and Me
I’m not sure how long I’ve been a member, but it’s been a while. I’ve never served as an officer but might be interested in volunteering in some capacity. I’ve been recognized often in Showcases, and won a Judge’s Choice last year.
