NATURE PHOTOGRAPHERS from 51 countries around the globe competed in the 21st annual Nature’s Best Photography Windland Smith Rice International Awards. The reward — to be exhibited at one of the most respected and highly visited museums in the world — the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.

New this year: The “Conservation Story” category, run in alliance with ILCP, where a series of images will be selected to reflect upon a conservation-based story. Also, the “Nature in Motion” video category is now operated in alliance with Smithsonian Earth and invites short documentaries or individual wildlife behavior sequence film.

The 2016 Grand Prize winner, Daisy Gilardini, of British Columbia Canada, has witnessed first-hand the impact her image has made on visitors to the museum as well as through press and social media. “I have been submitting to the NBP Awards competition since 2003 after learning about it at a NANPA Summit.” Daisy’s patience in the field and tenacity in entering extraordinary images through the years was finally rewarded when her image of a polar bear mother and cubs became an immediate favorite of the Judging Panel.

The 2016 Youth Photographer of the Year, David Rosenzweig of Mineola, New York, discovered his love for animals and photography on a family vacation. His primary focus is now on wildlife and conservation photography in sub-Saharan Africa, working with rhino and big cat organizations to help save some of Africa’s most endangered species. Rosenzweig is currently a freshman at Stanford University, where he hopes to continue his pursuit of photography along with International studies. “Winning this award is an incredible honor and one has had a profound impact on my life and focus moving forward.
