NANPA and the world lost a valued friend and photographer on Friday evening when Nancy Rotenberg succumbed to a long battle with cancer. Her husband, Michael Lustbader said, "Nancy's cancer recurred while in San Diego [where she was visiting] and she returned to Pennsylvania to resume her chemotherapy. Unfortunately, her response was not as hoped. She passed peacefully in her sleep this morning, surrounded by family and love."

Nancy was an incredible photographer who shared her gift with hundreds, if not thousands of people. Her influence was such that her particular type of photography became known, to some photo editors, as the Nancy Rotenberg-style. There were many who copied her, but none who could match her persona-someone whose positive energy was so infectious that when with her you couldn't help but share in her peacefulness and light when in her presence.

A Brief Biography

According to her website, Nancy's images and editorials appeared in magazines such as Adirondack Life, Birds & Blooms, Country Gardens, National Geographic, Nature's Best, Peterson's Photographic, Outdoor Photographer, and the World and I. Nancy's credits also include Hallmark, Red Oak, Reiman Publications, Renaissance, and Sunrise greeting cards as well as in calendars such as Mitsubhi, Nikon, Inner Reflections, Reiman Publications, Teldon and Willow Creek Press. Nancy's work was shown in galleries in Oregon and North Carolina and she has a number of images in the online Jaynes Gallery. She published several books including Photography and the Creative Life (July 2006) and Close-up Photography... Capturing Nature's Intimate Landscapes, How to Photograph Close-ups in Nature, and La Luz del Pueblo-Discovering a Sense of Place.

On Nancy's website, it says, "I hope that you enjoy the beauty and magic that I have discovered through photography, observation and appreciation. For me, life is about celebrating the gifts of life and all that contributes to passion and to the dance of artful living. Namasté from my light to yours.

Every day - dance at least once...."

In memory of Nancy, the NANPA Foundation has set up the Nancy Rotenberg Student Endowment Fund. Nancy was a mentor and inspiration to the High School Student Scholarship Program, and donations may be made on the NANPA website by clicking the link above.

And one last note from Nancy:

Nancy Rotenberg

Dear friends,

I have had a good life. I was privileged to receive love and honour and the spirit of all things beautiful. Please do not be sad that it was short - it was full. I leave with all the images that I have seen and experienced and all the hearts that I have hugged. Enjoy your dance, sweet souls, and remember me when the dolphins sing and the flowers wrap their arms around each other and breezes blow wise words to your hearts. Have open hearts - it is where the light and love will shine.

Namasté, Nancy
