What is NANPA?
The North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) evolved from an October 1993 conference at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, Jamestown, N.Y., at which more than 100 of North America's leading photographers, editors, publishers, stock agents and others involved in the field of nature photography participated in presentations and panel discussions. By the end of the meeting, there was general agreement that nature photography needed its own association.

Since then, NANPA has evolved into a 501(c)6 nonprofit organization made up of a wide range of individuals and corporations from all over North America and the world with an interest in nature photography.

What is the purpose and mission of NANPA?
NANPA's mission is to promote the art and science of nature photography as a medium of communication for nature appreciation and environmental protection. To provide education and inspiration, gather and disseminate information, and develop standards for all persons interested in the field of nature photography. To foster professionalism and ethical conduct in all aspects of our endeavors.

Who can join?
Anyone with an interest in nature photography. NANPA is an organization for nature "photography," not just nature "photographers." NANPA's membership is open to anyone interested in photography of nature and the environment, specifically professional and serious nature photographers, editors and publishers, educators, students, corporations and others.

For information on membership in the organization, check out the Membership page.

Who are NANPA's members?
NANPA's more than 2400 members include many of the top professionals in the nature photography field, and also includes aspiring professional photographers, advanced amateurs and newcomers. The membership includes many of the top stock agents internationally, photo editors, publishers, educators and students. For information on membership in the organization, check out the Membership page.

How do I contact NANPA?
Write, phone, fax or email NANPA. You'll find contact information on our Contact page. The office is open from 8am - 5pm, Mountain Time, Monday through Friday.

How do I get my photos published on NANPA's website?
Please see our Photo Submissions page for requirements and procedures for submitting your photos.

How do I become a member?
For your convenience, a form is provided online for you to print and fax to the office. See also our full color membership brochure, available as a PDF file. Or you may write, phone, fax or email your request for a membership application form. Membership is open to anyone interested in photography of nature and the environment, specifically professional and serious nature photographers, editors and publishers, educators, students and corporations.

What are membership dues?
General member dues are $100 per year, joint member dues (two people at the same address) are $125, student member dues are $25. The membership year is from July 1 to June 30.

NANPA also has corporate memberships at four levels. See our corporate membership page for specific details. Corporate memberships give manufacturers and suppliers an opportunity to support an organization dedicated to ethics, education and the environment as applied to the field of nature photography.

For individual membership information, check out the Membership Application page. NANPA is a non-profit association and dues may be tax-deductible if considered a business expense. Contact your tax advisor for more information.

What can NANPA do for me?
NANPA serves as a voice for nature photography, presents an Annual Summit, sends a newsletter to members six times a year, is a communications medium among our members, a coordinator of regional conferences, and a channel to inform members of happenings in the field of nature photography. See our benefits page for specific tangible benefits. The Board of Directors and the various committees continue to explore new roles for NANPA and additional benefits to members.

What are the benefits of membership?
Members receive a bimonthly newsletter, "Currents", containing information and articles about the association and activities and issues of interest to members. Membership includes discounts to many NANPA- sponsored events, conferences and activities. For specific information on member benefits, check out our Member Benefits page. Most important, members join a network of nature photographers, support services and a variety of individuals and businesses dedicated to the mission of NANPA.

What publications does NANPA offer?
NANPA's bimonthly newsletter, "Currents," contains articles about the association and activities of interest to members, written by members. If you would like to see a copy of the Currents guidelines for editorial submissions, check out the guidelines. NANPA also publishes an annual Membership Directory. Both publications accept advertising.

Do you meet regularly?
NANPA's first Nature Photography Forum in January 1995 drew a capacity crowd of 500 to Fort Myers, Florida, to hear and meet some of the world's leading nature photographers, agents and editors, and succeeding conferences have only improved on that record. See the NANPA Conferences page for more information.

Are there regional meetings and chapters?
There are no chapters, but there have been several successful regional meetings across the country. More are being planned, but NANPA needs members to help produce these exciting events. For information on having a NANPA regional conference in your area, contact the NANPA office and ask for our brochure on How to Hold a Regional Forum, or check out our meetings and conferences page.

What educational and scholarship programs does NANPA support or provide?
NANPA awards youth scholarships annually, with funding from NANPA's NANPA Foundation, for a number of youths to attend and participate in the Annual Summit. The Janie Moore Greene Grant goes to a student enrolled in a formal degree-granting course of instruction in photography. NANPA also offers the Philip Hyde Grant, and the Russ Kinne Recognition Grant. Information about these programs can be obtained from the NANPA office.

What is NANPA's policy on environmental and nature issues?
NANPA has authored an Environmental Statement, which outlines our policies. NANPA's Ethics Committee has issued a "Principles of Ethical Field Practices" statement. The Environment Committee has conducted surveys of the membership to determine members' feelings in the environmental area.

The Board recognizes that an individual's concept of ethical behavior and feelings about the environment are very personal. Consequently, NANPA may issue guidelines, white papers, and suggestions in these areas but does not attempt to dictate policies either to members or nonmembers.

Does NANPA provide a lobby to the government on issues that affect nature photography?
No. However, NANPA's Resource Relations Committee works to create a relationship and open dialog with several government organizations, such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, etc.

Who are the members of the NANPA Board of Directors?
The Board of Directors is made up of individual members -- professional and aspiring photographers, corporate representatives, editors, photo agents and educators. For more information on the Board of Directors, check out the NANPA Board of Directors page. For information on the various committees, check out the Committees Page.
